  It is technically only about how people think of wolves and have reacted to wolves throughout history, with only a few chapters on werewolves (which are fairly dry repetitions of legends from the dark ages). The multi-faceted, mysterious view of the wolf it gives is fantastic, especially the stuff about how Native Americans see the wolf, and the way the wolf is presented as an intelligent being that we can never really classify or understand, but that evokes deep feelings in the human soul.
